Catherine is going to supply the vial of dirt that has the first SCA tourney & the battle of Hastings in it.

Back of work, very proud of this. |
| finished stem stitch, ready to fill with dark green silks 6-26-11 |
Got a little done today. |
| 6-27-11 added a touch of color to the bird. I'll add some to the tail section too, but the rest of him will be green. |
Worked on the claw and tail sections......6-30-11 |
| 7-12-11 embroidery is finished |
I have the dirt from: Hastings, England & 1st SCA Tourney sites |
Now to make the bag and apply the embroidery roundel. And also here is a photo of the back side of the embroidery. Kept it nice and neat which reflects the front.
This is by far the best I've done on embroidery fill.
Stem Stitch in yellow and everything else is Chain Stitch |

| Cut the fabrics, the pouch will be lined with a white silk as well. |
Several things about the pouch:
1. keep wide seam allowances (I didn't do that)
2. remember that silk...frays...a lot!
3. Rondel needs to have a seam allowance larger than the 1/16" one that I did
4. Make top longer, so that the embroidery does not get bunched up. Thank goodness I had enought to make that change |
tiny tiny stitches to get the rondel down, then dark green silk to cover the sewn edge, couched with the gold silk.
13 strands of dark green
4 strands of gold to couch |
couching done
now to put the pouch all together. I hope to get it together tomorrow. |
back of couching 7-19-11 |
Nothing is ever easy. Great embroidery and then the silk frays...
Not enough to get the top done, so I'm going to have to invent something to work. Will not get done today like I had hoped.
7-20-11 |
I folded the edges as best I could to keep the fraying under the seam.
bound the top so there would be little to none there. |
| made two 16"" silk ties from the silk colors I used on the bird embroidery. |
Put the ties in place and pined the top. Using the gold silk thread, sewed by hand the top of the pouch. |
| Here is the little bottle of dirt with the pouch open |
Here is the pouch closed. It is very narrow. I cannot get my hand down in the pouch, but it's meant to hold the precious dirt and not be of use of much else anyway...just to look pretty.
Done 8-1-11
The pouch sold for $30.00 at auction, so that was good. Another woman had offered up to $40.00 but she never sent in her money.
It was interesting to see what sold for the most a simple haversack sold for $50.00...and a coife sold for over $60.00
A modern book sold for $40.00 which is over the new published price! |
