Reliquary

A gift to Sir Gregory of Lock Swan

The Eternal Guardsman

Colors

This is a project requested from the Crown Princess.

I have to get it done before 12th night!

Catherine spent several hours showing me how to read and approach the project

It takes her 2 weeks working every day!

Pattern

Size 28 Count evenweave fabric, mine is white but any color is good cause all of it is covered up.  Use a hoop large enought to hold the whole pattern, since it's so small  3wide x 6 long

mark 3" x 6" on the linen with removable marker a cross.  This is only a guide not exact.

Size 24 Tapestry (blunt) needle

4 strands of silk, so you break up the thread into 3 sections of 4 each

There are only 3 size of stitches: 2 , 4 & 6

Once you know that you can recognize by the size on the pattern how many threads you go over.  It's important to count threads not holes!

Pattern is from this site.

His Device

  11-1-10

I started the project yesterday and was working my way around the large square...when I got to the point where it met up...ACK!  I'm off by 1 stitch.

Had to pull the whole thing out and start over cause I didn't know where I went wrong.

I know now to keep the elements closer together.  Do one of the little squares then do the long line to the next little square.  Less likely to get it wrong.

Using Brick stitch and silk

Found that I have to use the large needle threader, those little ones with the wires are for sewing machines only...didn't know that!

I hold the pattern sideways and count the stitches that way since I'm working from left to right on the pattern.
There will be 5 pattern repeats, that is what Catherine remembered.

Is 3rd time the charm?  I had to pull out all the work once again and start anew.  I think this will be the one.  Once again you can see what I had to pull out.  In stead of 9 stitches I'd done 10!  One stitch makes all the difference in this pattern.   11-6-10

Once again I think I'm going to have to rip out part of the pattern.  What I have done on the right side of the photo apprears to be correct, but the little square on the left is wrong.  When I did the bottom of the pattern, it did not line up right!      who would have thought it would be so frustrating.

I'm going to have little bells on the bottom rather than the standard tassels.  Catherine has them (for one thing) and a tassel takes a whole skein of silk (another $3.00 each)  3 bells in the hand vs $9.00 plus tax...I think the bells.

Check it out:  See where it

does not meet up properly

top is good, not the bottom.

Will have to rip out and try again...4th, but at least the right side is OK, I think!

So I know that the right side was error free.  I then expanded the pattern.

From there I worked out the length back to the error side on the left.

Then I'll work out the edges of the pattern.  Since the sides will be sewn up, I'll have to do one pattern row less, so the patterns when sewn will be exact and match up.                         11-8-10

extant reliquary bags brick stitch
2 examples of Reliquary bags one in England's V & A of which the pattern I'm using is derived and the other in Germany.

I spent a good part of the day stitching.  I removed the stitches that were wrong and stitched with correct stitches.

You can see how the pattern looks like the one from the V & A Museum

Here is the link, but they do not have a photo up.

Here is a color photo.

I purchased enough silk today to make 2 more pouches.  One for my Service Project for the Guild and Breast Cancer Research and one for myself.  The price on the silk has greatly increased since Catherine purchased them for $3.00  now they are $4.90 each Must be about 20 hrs to get this far.
I need to find something special to put in my little pouches. 11-9-10
yellow

So the black is just about done (only the little bits around the edges is left and I don't want to finish that till I get everything else done.

Added the yellow bits and they will have white inside them.  I'll alternate with white and yellow lines inside.  Then I'll use the blue to fill in all the little dots.

11-10-10

Got more done today.  I wish I had a blue to do the alternate stripes.  I may just do that and buy the silk.

I did.  I purchased a dark blue silk for the alternate stripes.  It was a better color than what I had from Catherine.  S1002 a very pretty color and better match.

Catherine really liked the way I made this in the diagonal stripes, she said she never would have thought of that.

finished before 1/15/11
Apparently this style is called:  opus teutonicum (body of german work) I have to make it into a pouch, but all the embroidery is done.
Putting it all together:  All Hand sewn

Sew the sides together one stitch in, so the ground fabric does not show (done 1/25/11)

add the bells (done 1/25/11)

make the cord 10" for 3" pouch, make 2 (done 2/3/11)

attach cord making space with awl for the cord at the top : so I did that and then realized that I need 2 cords to go through...sigh.. so I used the awl and poked another set of holes above the ones I had made. (2/3/11)

Make up the lining  (done 1/25/11)

Attach lining to top of pouch cover with button hole stitch.

Just need to know how to make up the cords and sew the top up.  It's a 4 plait braid with the colors as follows YBBY using 6 strands each.

measured 22" long thread to braid.  made them 10" long each.  If I had more silk, I think I would have made them 12" each.

getting frustrated...taking a break  12:33pm

braid the cord then using a large needle and an awl, punch holes and thread the braid through.  One on each side.
Yup only 3" wide.

Sides are hand sewn Top is button hole stitch in black silk, silk lining

Finished 2/3/11 @ 5:50pm!!

March Crown 2012 I got to met Sir Gregory.
